March 10, 2010. Sri Lankan parliament extends state of emergency

The Parliament voted on March 9th to extend the nationwide state of emergency until the April 2010 parliamentary elections, reports indicated. The law enables officials to detain terror suspects without habeas corpus rights, with the government claiming the laws are required against the Tamil Tiger remnants and opposition warning the laws are used to stifle the media and opposition.
