The U.S. Consulate in Reynosa, Tamaulipas state reopened on March 8th, although authorities are continuing to warn against unnecessary travel in the region due to ongoing battles between drug cartels. The U.S. Consulate in Monterrey on March 10th warned U.S. residents to avoid travel on highways between Monterrey and Reynosa and Nuevo Laredo, where checkpoints operated by drug cartels have been set up. If travel is necessary, foreign nationals are urged to do so only during daylight hours.

Nuevo Leon and Tamaulipas state have seen an increase in drug-related violence since Los Zetas and the Gulf cartel ended an alliance and the Gulf cartel is now reportedly working with La Familia and the Sinaloa cartel to eliminate Los Zetas.
