Security forces went on high alert in Tibet region on March 8th some two-years after riots erupted in the local capital Lhasa and across Tibetan-populated areas of China, U.S.-based media reported. As foreign journalists visited the area in early March, security forces reportedly replaced the uniforms of paramilitaries and soldiers with track suits and "civilian" clothes. Although many Tibetans are benefiting from economic development in the area, tensions over the influx of Han Chinese refugees, perceived inequalities in development favoring Han migrants, and the treatment of Tibetan Buddhism and its leaders has led to smoldering tensions in the region.
