Doctors launched a strike in Sofia and other cities on March 9th over delayed payments, union officials said. Although government has claimed that the doctors would be paid outstanding funds by tomorrow, the union said that doctors would not work until the payments were made. Patients were reportedly refused treatment unless they personally paid doctors.

Following a spate of recent protests over the poor state of the country's health care system, the government vowed on March 8th to raise health insurance taxes to pump an additional 350 million levs (US$244.9 million) into the system. A vote on the tax will be held tomorrow.
