Nine alleged members of an Al-Qaida cell are on trial in Brussels and are accused of recruiting jihadists and preparing terrorist attacks, media sources reported on March 8th. Seven of the suspects appeared in court, while two others are still in the run and are being tried in absentia. The group was arrested in a 2008 police operation on the eve of a European Union summit in Brussels. Among the suspects is a Belgian-Moroccan woman who has prior convictions in Switzerland and Belgium and served time in jail for distributing jihadist propaganda. Experts say the woman has been used as an "icon" by Al-Qaida to attract and recruit other women in Europe to the group.
