Opposition leader Viktor Yanukovych narrowly won Ukraine's presidential election, according to exit polls on February 8th. While a victory by the pro-Russian Yanukovych would indicate a reverse of the country's pro-Western Orange Revolution, according to preliminary results, Yanukovych beat Prime Minister Yulia Tymoshenko by only 2.6 percentage points, much less than the 10% margin his party had hoped for. Meanwhile, Tymoshenko has shown no signs of standing down and announced that her team was conducting a "parallel count" of the vote. There have been no reports of extensive breaches of voting procedure during the polls, according to the chief of the EU monitoring mission.
