The government began to deploy at least 20,000 extra policemen and soldiers across the country on February 8th ahead of the February 26th Supreme Court ruling on whether the government can seize exiled former Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra's US$2.2 billion fortune, a government spokesperson said. Officials fear the ruling could lead to a populist backlash, with 13,300 security forces to be deployed in pro-Thaksin areas and 6,500 in Bangkok, which will be ringed by 200 checkpoints.
