February 8, 2010. Nigerian president hands power to VP

President Yar'Adua will formally inform the Senate that he is on medical vacation, automatically empowering Vice-President Goodluck Jonathan to become acting president, reports indicated on February 5th. The announcement comes over two months after Yar'Adua left Nigeria to receive medical treatment at a Saudi hospital, leading to fears of a power vacuum and unrest.
