Suspected Maoist militants blew up a portion of the Howrah, West Bengal state, - Mumbai, Maharashtra state, railway, on February 8th, derailing a goods train with no injuries reported, local media reported. The attack, which took place near the border between Jharkhand and Orissa states, came a day after Maoists called for a 72-hour bandh, or shutdown protest, in Bihar, Chhattisgarh, Jharkhand, Orissa, and West Bengal states, to protest the government's planned offensive against them. Officials suspended all traffic on the route until it could be repaired.
